Apologies Margee. I think you are right. I had forgotten the marriage was in the name of Lily D. Mountford, so a mother called Dorothy is much more likely. |

A tree on Ancestry says that Lily Dorothy Mountford was born 1888, Milton, Staffordshire, daughter of Thomas Mountford & Dorothy Smith. She married Henry Mathews. |

She married as Lily D. Could this be her birth? Middle name Dorothy after her mother? |

I still think her parents are Thomas & Dorothy. She's with them on the 1911 census aged 23 and there's a 4 year old grandson named Arthur with them. |

I think the family that Reggie found in the 1901 census is likely to be the correct family. This is them in 1911:- |

I would suspect that Lily's father was Thomas not Frederick. |

Margee...I saw that census and thought the same! Lynn has an unsourced tree on Ancestry and has Lily as born 1886 ...so I think the statement "father Frederick" is an assumption. |

Lilly in 1911 but no Arthur. Would she have been only 15 when he was born? |

This is possibly Lily's marriage (Wolstanton is less than three miles from Hanley) |

Does anyone know anything about my Grandfather. Arthur Matthews. I have been trying to trace his birth father for years. His Mother was Lilly Mountford, daughter of Frederick Mountford and was born in Hanley. I know that he was brought up with the surname Matthews but do not know if that was the name of his Stepfather as I am unclear if Lilly married his father. He grew up in Failsworth but I do not know if he was born there or in Stoke. His d.o.b. is March 1907. Any help would be much appreciated. |
