Find Ancestors

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to find the birthplace of my
3xgrt grandfather?He appeared on the Scottish 1841 census but this particular census did not record the actual place of birth,it simply answers the question with a yes or no if they were born in the parish where the census was taken.I'm hopeful that there are records I could look at which I may have missed,can anyone help me please as this would hopefully open up another cluster to add to my family tree.
My 3xgrt grandfather was not born in the parish of Portmoak where he lived in 1841
but I don't have a clue where to start looking.

Hi,
My 3xgrt grandfather was David Reid he is aged 40 on the 1841 census
for Portmoak Parish,the village was West Balgedie.
The only other record I have found was his marriage to my 3xgrt grandmother
Isabella Sinclair which took place on 27th October 1820 in Glendevon Parish.
I'm afraid I have no info on his siblings or parents as I have no idea which area to look at. I've been stuck at this brick wall for 32 yrs would you believe,probably because I'm not sure what to look for. PS. He was a blacksmith on census,but may have been a drover before his marriage.

Age 40-45 is not that old!


I understand that Scottish parish records, and birth certificates (if after the mid-1850s) do give the names of parents, wives, etc

I understand bmd registration came in in Scotland around 1855 ......... someone may know better


Do remember that ages on the 1841 Census (and ONLY that census) were rounded down to the nearest 5 ................ so someone aged 40 would actually be between 40 and 45

Have you tried looking for Isabella or any of the children on later censuses??


I note that all children are shown as born in Kinross, while Isabella is born in "Scotland", like David.

For example, this looks like the elder son, Thomas, in 1851.

he was a Blacksmith's Apprentice in 1841, now is Blacksmith in Portmoak ...... and he has siblings Eliza (??Elizabeth), Grace and James living with him

I would first look to see if you can find David (and Isabella's) death in or around Portmoak. You might information on his birthplace, or parents, on there.


Also remember the Scottish naming practice ................. maybe the names of the children are a clue?

Yes that is my David you have on the 1841 census.
I have all his children and a bit about his wife Isabella Sinclair,but as I said
all I have on him is his marriage and 1841 census,I have searched and found
a few of his children's marriages,including my 2xgrt grandfather James his youngest son,he married Barbara Low in Jan 1855.
Parents of James as on ennumeration is; David Reid and Isabella Sinclair(Deceased).
Does this mean they are both dead written like this or is it just the latter?
Also found his daughter Grace's marriage to a Charles Archibald in 1857 and on this one it says; Father-David Reid(Deceased)and Mother-Isabella Sinclair(Deceased).So would I be right in thinking he is definately dead on Grace's marriage?Not too sure about James's though.
Any help and advice would be great.

Hi also the eldest son Thomas is recorded as head on the 1851 census 10 yrs later
and is living with some of his siblings.

When you look for their marriage on Familysearch it only appears once which would suggest that the Banns were only read in one parish. To me that would suggest that they were both of the same parish, in this case Glendevon. Glendevon is in Perthshire so on the 1841 census in Kinross it would indicate that neither David nor Isabella were of that county.


Have you checked the original image on Scotlandspeople for the marriage - just in case it gives a little more information please?

Yes I already have the actual marriage of David Reid to Isabella Sinclair.
I found it on Scotlands people and ordered a copy.It basically says that their
3 marriage banns were done in the Glendevon parish at a place called Muckhart.
But thats all it tells me.

It does state they were both in this parish.
I had an old letter passed to me that was written about 30 yrs ago by an older
gentleman named Thomas Reid (I think it may have been David's grt grandson).
He said in the letter that his theory was David Reid may have been a cattle drover
walking a number of cattle down to the Falkirk Tryst cattle market twice yearly,in the spring and autumn,stopping for a rest at Glendevon,this may have been the way my 3xgrt grandparents knew each other and married,but from where he started his
journey I don't know.It looks like after they married they moved to West Balgedie and he became a blacksmith and started having his children with Isabella.Its frustrating not knowing where he actually came from.Especially after looking for this answer for 32 yrs.
