Children wouldn't be down as step children as the relationship given is of that to the head of house. As Henry was the father's children they would be noted as son or daughter. They would only be step children if they had been the children of Betty and he was not the father.

i did wonder that too - the census does not give any indication of step children.. i shall have a look tho - thanks

Do you have the birth cert. of the children to confirm mother's name?
Maybe the children weren't hers?
Maybe Henry was married to someone else so wasn't able to marry her until later one?

The reason i queried this was due to the following

Her first daughter Elizabeth b. 1844 and her last child a son Richard was b. 1863

Being married in 1865 meant that all her children would be illigitimate

The marriage is clearly shown on freebmd!!!!!!!!!

I have been unable to find a marriage for Henry Ashworth to Betty Trickett using Ancestry. If anyone feels they can help i would be much appreciated.
