They had a son Richard and a daughter Paula: Richard died, Paula is still alive.

John worked in Nigeria for many years.

Interestingly the shipping record includes the name Toye.

Kath: until recently I had assumed that she did in fact marry using Elmet, but I've recently been given some family papers which gave her name as Toye, and the other records Including the marriage were in the name of Toye. So maybe she was "unofficially" adopted? Maybe just "staying with" as she would have been 24 at the time of her marriage.
Also her mother was not my grandmother, her husband's parents were my grandparents, my mother was his sister.

GlitterBaby: I don't know her age at marriage, that was what I was hoping to find out.
I don't have a copy of the cert.
I had assumed she was a spinster but don't know this. Could conceivably have been a war widow?

Choccy: those death records are spot on, thank you.

argyllgran: interesting that there's no Toye, I'd take a punt on the Tye in your list. Possibly an error in transcription? Thank you very much for doing the search, I hadn't thought of looking like that. Does freebmd give more detailed records? Joyce as middle name would probably clinch it.

If you check out Freebmd..........you will see they had a son.

All 3 appear on an incoming passenger list from Calabar Nigeria which i will send to you by PM.

Doreen Joyce Audrey is age 32 in 1953.

If birth was 1921, that narrows it down to two from the list above, assuming she was born in England, but either may still be alive.

Or maybe the one born in West Ham in 1920.

She doesn't seem to have been a widow.
Again according to FreeBMD, there's no marriage between a Toye and a Doreen anywhere, at any time between 1837 and 1946

There's a Tye and a Toitz , but no Toye or Elmet

She married with the name Toye. Surely if she was adopted by the "Elmets" she would have married using that name?

Doreen was my aunt. She married John Hamilton Stacey 11 January 1947 in Southend, Essex.

I believe she was adopted - possibly a war orphan?? - by the Elmets (sp?) at 51 Walker Drive, Southend on Sea. Does anyone have access to any records that would (dis)prove this please? I've not been involved with adoption records before.

It would be most helpful if birth date was available as well as parents.
