ANYONE GOT SOME CUSTARD????

Gee Report 12 Oct 2010 18:26

I hope this talk of increasing tuition fees by two fold brings this government to its knees

They are also discussing universities being able to charge what they want!

So....can you imagine what Oxford or Cambridge are going to charge if that goes through...in other words HE will be for the rich, the very rich.

I was lucky enough to have my employer pay for my university education...not everyone is so lucky

And the libdems....what a shower of ####

Ginny -- if you want to guess what Oxbridge will be charging if left to their own devices -- check out what Harvard and Yale charge in the US. ;)

Virtually all universities in Canada are "public". There are a few private hangovers left. The one I went to c1970 actually was -- a small and, if you can believe it, church-run one -- I went there because they took me and 60 others in the province after the second-last year of high school, so I didn't have to take that final year. Tuition here is pretty standard, maybe some variation province to province among the public universities.

Anyhow, Harvard, 2009-2010 year (quick google): $33,696 US. A little more than half that in pounds, I think. Yup: £21,331 today ($34,050 Cdn).

Not quite what students there pay now, I hope!

Checking here, U of Toronto undergraduate fees 2009-2010 started at just under $5,000. U of T isn't far below Oxford/Harvard for undergrad, academically.

Good dog. I just checked the U of Toronto website, and law school tuition is now $23,508 a year (for three years). ?!?!? It was well under $1,000 a year in the 70s when I was in law school. I don't think I could have gone, if tuition was the 1970s equivalent of that. I was already putting a week's earnings a month into my $5,000 student loan (for six years' loans) when I got out -- and those loans covered more than just tuition (I was lucky to have a tuition scholarship for the first two years, but still needed loans and grants and part-time jobs for all six years, to live) . Nobody now could ever start out as I did -- on my own, from an office in my house, taking cases mainly referred to me from community groups and working for good causes.

Oh no! This thread is at the top of the page again! When are you lot going to get out there and help someone??

On the way home from school with the grandkids, we were talking about the funeral of their gt.grandmother last week. I told them that the lady who lives opposite me had died on that day. Grandson pops up with "Everybody from here there and everywhere round you is dying aren't they?". Granddaughter...."Well, you're getting to that age aren't you?" I feel so much better for that.......not.

Granddaughter is doing a topic on plastic surgery for one of her lessons and reckons that I don't need it because I haven't got any wrinkles!! That made me feel a bit better.

Going to finish off on TTF.
