Ah, Fanny, those are all the standard arguments. ;)
They do it because they want to -- so what? There are lots of antisocial ways people would like to earn money. Doesn't mean we have to make 'em legal. The downsides of prostitution, for society, far outweigh what someone would like to do.
Do the downsides of making it illegal outweigh the downsides of it being legal (as with drugs)? Depends on how it's done.
If it were legal they would be safe? (and other downsides would go away, e.g. trafficking of women and girls into prostitution) -- not in the experience of Amsterdam, etc. It just doesn't work that way for all of the women currently on the street trying to support their drug habits. They aren't suddenly going to become middle-class happy hookers operating out of nice safe houses in nice neighbourhoods. Or register and get licences, or demand safe sex practices ...
Experience in Holland and Australia is that trafficking is not reduced. The men using the women don't give a s* where the women are coming from, and as long as there's demand, there has to be supply. The cheaper and more easily coerced the supply, for the ones profiting from it, the better. It's like any other kind of undesirable work, isn't it? People enter illegally, or are trafficked in (people are trafficked other than for prostitution, too), and exploited. Sex trade exploitation is just a bit more unpleasant and dangerous than sweatshop exploitation.
The law has to be against the buying and the buyers. That's what Sweden -- good old open-minded Sweden -- has done. It isn't illegal to sell the services, it's illegal to buy them, because prostitutes are seen as what they are: victims of a form of exploitation and violence against women. One that civilized societies really don't endorse. And it has cut prostitution and trafficking enormously.
Yes, there are people who need money to support themselves. Turning a society into one where women are bought and sold openly and with tacit social approval isn't the best solution to poverty.

Jackson and Aaran had the usual row after coming out of club on their way home. Aaran gets out halfway,Jackson drove off(not been drinking)Aaron phones him to come back,he picks up phone to answer him (STUPID MAN !)and drops it,bends down, and when he sits back up swerves to miss oncomng car and ends on rail line, train comes and smacks van and Aaran runs up to find him.
Nough??
You can see it on the ITV website thingy I think, but it was an hour long..!
Edits. I certainly wasnt talking of middle class hookers Janey,I dont know any,I can only talk of the ones I know /knew round Kings Cross/Finsbury Park and the more run down places in London that I have worked or lived in.. I am now going to ignore/not respond to any more of that subject and agree to disagree as like I said,I aint got your way with words for one and have my own opinions which I am entitled to and on this am keeping.....:)

FBG, we're all entitled to those opinions. Each and every one of us, to any old opinion we like.
Not investigating the facts they're based on, or looking at what effects they're likely to have, in case that doesn't support the opinions ... well, we're all entitled to do that, too.
It all happens to be of particular concern to me at the moment here because a judge has just struck down the law against soliciting (only soliciting, keeping a house and living on the avails are illegal here) because it "forces" women onto the street where they're not safe. Since I don't see anybody being forced to do anything (unless they really are being forced), and since I'd rather live in Antarctica than in a society that approves of women being rented for sexual use, I'm hoping to see a successful appeal. Although I'm really hoping we'll go the way of Sweden.

Welcome back Renes. Sounds like you have had a wonderful time with your sister. It'll take a while to settle down again I guess - for both of you.
I am in danger of becoming gaga......
..today, after OH had had treatment at the dentist, I shrugged my coat back on whilst OH stood staring blankly at me.
"What?" I asked
........then I realised...
I had put HIS coat on.
I didn't have a coat with me!!
Dear oh dear.
