Sounds good to me Gin. I will look out for your name on the candidates list for the next bi election.

Listen to you people. Legalize drugs, and outlaw cigarettes??

Legalize drugs, yes. It won't solve all the problems, but it will reduce the harm.

Criminalize cigarettes, and you'll create many of the same crime problems that criminalizing drugs does! Maybe not people stealing to feed their habits so much -- but organized crime running the contraband show.

Canada has tried raising taxes to prohibitive levels to prevent people from starting and deter people from smoking.

What did we get? Machine gun shoot-outs on the St Lawrence river -- smugglers strafing the community centre in a small town there, for instance. Because cigarettes were cheap and legal in the US.

Also, because major cigarette manufacturers were working directlywith the smuggling rings, exporting Canadian cigarettes to the US dytu-free, where they were sold and then smuggled back into Canada for resale. I have a friend who works for the Canada Revenue Agency who buys her cigarettes contraband!! -- through other people who work there.

Outlawing things that people want badly enough seldom works.

Prostitution is another matter. Outlawing the buying and selling of human beings is actually a good thing in itself. Buying and selling human beings isn't quite like smoking a Rothmans or a joint. Sweden does it the right way: outlaw the *buying*. Charge the johns.

Most prostitution is just an easy way of funnelling money from the pockets of stupid men into the bank accounts of organized crime -- because most prostitutes work to buy drugs.

If the drugs were legal ... a lot of women wouldn't be on the streets.

And if the johns were the criminals, there would be a lot less demand, and a lot fewer women being coerced or trafficked into the nasty world of prostitution.

I agree with most of what you say on prostitution Janey BUT there are some Men and women who have that trade because they wish too,I have met and known and still know each kind in my life and even the ones that do it for drink/drugs would rather have it legalised as they get nicked and then have to work harder to pay the fine and fund their addictions too.
Some of the women I know and have known did it simply for extras for their children so that they could have holidays and decent christmas and birthdays for them as they were on the lower side of a wage income.
I have also met men whos wives have done it and they have been done for living on immoral earnings, even though they too were working but the wage they brought in was not enough to have a decent standard of living for their family and supported their wives in their work "on the side"..
And if it were legal the men and women would not have to walk the streets would they ?as they would have somewhere safe to work from.

Prostitution has been with us since time began and will remain with us until time ends.
It is a sought after commodity and there are men and women willing to supply it.
Also if it was legal I do think that the "slave trade"would find it more difficult to carry on here in Britain as you could have a register with names on of legals and there would be a queue to be on it, so what would the point be of something that did not make money to traffickers.
And with it being regulated it would be safer all round for all.

I dont have your words for the discussion Janey, but that is my opinion and I am sticking to it.
And I am not getting into a disagreement about it as you know I wont.
My opinion stated and that is it for me.

JC, my comment about making fags illegal was not meant to be serious.

Anyhow, anyone know where I can get 'contraband' fags please ;)

Renes.......you're back?

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 7 Oct 2010 19:00

Hello Renes...

Contraband fags can be found quite easily by asking discreetly of your teenage sons friends etc I would have thought.
Mine certainly know..!

My beloved sister left this afternoon - sobbed in to her brekkie - and sobbed at airport - and thru security - but stopped once thru

Saw her going into Duty Free - so reasoned she was OK

Have a super time - spent lots of time together - had many trips out and had her doing "handicrafts" - painting roof tiles and decorating them !!!!
