Was watchin Panorama...Kids In Care.

We were accepted for fostering teenage boys and then as soon as we had got the green light after the course etc HID got ill,we had to move, ending in another county and fate said to me that it was not to be.
I was on the list to be one of the "emergency"fosters as well, anytime of day and night for the "bad"boys that were nicked and not allowed home on bail conditions.(Danger money not included;0
Would still like to do it ,but dont think HID could cope with it now as he seems to have quite a few bad days.
But I would have liked to try.

AND I knew what I would have been letting myself in for as I have first hand experience of difficult teenage boys of my own plus a few that were/are like extra sons to me.

Maybe in my next life.

No handle I'm affraid, not my house so not allowed to do anything even a picture on the wall is a no..no.
The towel rail seem ok to grab on to just for balance, may get one of those suction hand rails just in case though.

I would'nt fancy looking after teenagers full stop

Quick visit whilst between driving jobs and have a double chocha mocha to boot!

This week, the hospital where I do my voluntary work, implemented a no-smoking ban entirely. No shelters....nothing. They have imported some security guards to patrol the grounds to 'enforce' this ruling.

One of them stopped by our desk yesterday and said....."would you believe it, but yesterday a patient, in their nightwear, complete with catheter bag and drip stand, staggered out onto the main road, went to the bus shelter, and said to the bemused people waiting for a bus to "shift up, can't you see I'm ill" and promptly sat down and lit up!"

Words fail me sometimes [but not often]. I don't think it will work personally. If people want to smoke, they will smoke because ......well, I suppose they have to.

Mmm. this double chocha mocha is delish.

Right....going to find meself a duster and rush round the bedrooms before haring off to Chorley. Dentist with 11 year old.......deep joy.

That sounds VERY harsh Cynthia,

My husband is a smoker and since I was diagnosed with chronic lung disease he has taken to smoking outside in the garden - even in the wind and the rain (bless!!)

I don't think he will ever give up so like everyone else who can't 'give up', it is sad that they should end up in hospital where they cannot smoke - If they are 'on death's door 'anyway, what more harm can they do ??

Outside - yes - for the sake of the staff, but let them 'have a life' for what little time thy have left!!

we have similar smoking bans here

...... as of 2008, you cannot smoke within 6 m of a door or openable window, outdorr patio, etc ............. that was brought in to stop the congregation of smokers around the doorways.

There's been no smoking indoors in any public buildings, including bars, pubs, shops, etc for years.

Unlike what I hear from the UK ...... this has had very little effect on business in the pubs, restaurants. In fact, it seems that more non-smokers are going out now.

On September 1st this year, Vancouver Parks Board brought in a ban .... no smoking in any parks or on beaches.

I am an ex-smoker, stopped in 1990 after having laser treatment

........... but I do feel very much for those who are forced to stop because of rules.

I keep coming back to the fact that it is legal to buy tobacco and tobacco products ........... and governments make much money from taxing them ............... so how can it be illegal to use a legal product???

If they really wanted to stop people doing harm to themselves, they would make it illegal to buy or use tobacco.

I am a smoker and I have gone outside for a ciggie in a hospital with drip attached, when smoking was'nt banned every where. I dont think I would bother now my walking is bad.
Many years ago I spent a night in a cottage hospital having a lump removed from my ankle so could'nt walk very well, there was a smoking room in those days, but I could'nt get to it. The nurse let me have one by my bed.

I won too in Vegas but soon put it back Dea

Dea

Dea Report 6 Oct 2010 20:20

It must be bad though for those people in hospitals and care homes who have smoked for many years and cannot now do it 'in their own homes' ??

Dea x

P. S. - I just saw your 'extra bit' Ja....x

I didn't 'put it back' - I came home with 'my big bucket full' !!!!!!

It has changed now but only a couple of years ago I took one of my 'passengers' in the middle of the night to a hospital in Spain and the 'nurse/receptionist' was there to book her in, smoking a cigarette behind the screen!!

I had a family doctor from about 1969 to about 1985, who would examine you in the examination room, then move into his office for "discussions"

He always went into the bottom drawer of the desk, took out an ashtray, and lit up

One time, I asked if I could join him!

He was a great doctor, but ......... ...... died of lung cancer about 1985. his body couldn't take the chemo they then gave, and he died after the second treatment.

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 6 Oct 2010 21:29

I smoke and I have little doubt that it's effects will ultimately cause my demise. It is my life however and as far as I am concerned it is my choice. Having said that I do my very best not to allow my habit to cause any inconvenience or harm to others. I do not smoke in the presence of non smokers even in my own house and I have never smoked in a restaurant.

I find these smoking bans totally hypocritical and agree with Sylvia that if governments were seriously solely concerned about the unhealthy aspect of the habit then they would make it illegal in the same way as they have made the use of certain drugs illegal. It is perfectly obvious that the revenue that governments obtain from the taxes they impose on tobacco products far exceeds the additional cost of health care for those who chose to use them.

Dea

Dea Report 6 Oct 2010 21:33

I think the Spanish system is quite good.

All the bars and restaurants have signs outside to say 'You can smoke' or 'you can't smoke' - Red or Green!! - You then have a choice as to which ones you use!!

The majority nowadays are 'non-smoking' which is VERY strange for Spain!!!
