Yeah I agree Fans
I posted a question once about the cost of hand controls....to which I got all the if you get a motability car its free.
I said the car I fancy has a down payment of 3k plus the 7.5k over 3 years then nothing back at the end.
I was told there are cars with no down payment!!! what use are they to me? I cannot get in and out of a little car and I need room for my scooter. These people are so blinkered

Not just them
HID parked at our local supermarket one day and got out of his car and a woman came and and started shouting at him about parking in a disabled parking spot and it was disgusting etc for an able bodied man to do that.
He said nothing but reached in and got his blue badge and stuck it in front of her face, she went red and walked off quickly. !
Just cos he looks as though he has nothing wrong with him dont mean he hasnt.
One night in a local pub someone said something about him being on this that and tother and not working and he didnt look disabled to them,so he dropped his jeans ,took all his bandages off and showed the whole pub his right leg in all its gory detail.
That shut them up !!!

Not just blinkered Ja...x, I can think of many uncomplimentary words which would fit the bill.

Do you know, about 30 years ago, the local authority built a new library where my parents lived. There was a grand opening because it had disabled facilities including a brand new lift. My mum and dad went (I have a feeling they were invited because my dad was a campaigner for MS), and guess what?? Couldn't get mum's wheelchair in the lift as it was too narrow!!!! Ooooh did words fly on paper after that!!

I have inherited that campaigning gene and I never cease to be amazed at what goes on within local authority circles. So much time and money wasted. So many empty words and promises. So much distress caused to those who are already in distress. So much unnecessary paperwork.

C.r.a.s.h.........oops just fell orf me soap box!

I fancy getting a white stick and get out of the drivers side, just to see the look on their faces lol

Need to get my blue badge first though

These disabled facilities are great Cyn.
The Job centre I had to go to had a ramp which was great for the scooter no car park near by no disabled toilet, infact no toilet for the public..think I may pee myself next time just to show them what its like.
I read today that someone asked for a chair to sit on in the job centre and was told... No..as the last time one had been thrown at an adviser!!!

Vancouver was really helped by the fact that we had a quadraplegic mayor for 3 years, from 2005 to 2008.

He had been a City Councillor for several years before that

If you watched the Closing Ceremonies at the Turin Winter Games in 2006, you would have seen him receiving the Flag and then doing twirls on stage in his chair.

He was a great guy, done loads for disbaled and raising awareness ...... BUT he was a b****y awful mayor!

His was a disability due to a skiing accident in his late teens. He got his start in the world by getting involved with starting disabled sailing, starting up companies to make accessories to make life easier .... he'd have some ideas, get other inventors to give him ideas, then he would find funding for engineers to turn the idea into reality

Vancouver had been a very aware city before that, with cut out street corners, accessible buildings, etc etc, but Sam Sullivan just raised the awareness to a whole new level.

Google his name ................ there's a lot, including quite a nice piece in Wikipedia.

But as I say, he was terrible as a mayor ....... turned into a little dictator, and left Vancouver facing huge debts.

I still cannot see how Newman becomes Fountain Newman and why his wife would als carry the name Fountain Newman too. There are Fountaines in the village and not may Newmans and the one that is a possible has different parents.

Have you looked at the actual 1911 image? Sometimes middle names get carried down a household, in earlier censuses, because a ditto gets misinterpreted.

That 1881 census for Henry Fountain -- Ann o' GG did post it in the thread right at the very beginning.

LadyKira

LadyKira Report 5 Oct 2010 02:44

The 1911 image is perfectly clear. And they are the people he remembers.
The Fountain is written in full for each person.

The poster is concerned that Henry Fountain is born 1883 according to 1911 and 1877 according to marriage cert and James is father on cert butnot on other records.
And why would Henry Fountain become HFN?

I have to go as I have work tomorrow. I would be grateful for your input as something is not right.

re the middle name

OH's father had a middle name, let's call him Thomas Smith Jones, where Smith was his mother's maiden name

He married, and then he and his wife opened a shop

Some deliveries went awry because there was another shopkeeper in town using the name Thom Jones

So, OH's father began to trade as T Smith Jones

The customers began to call him Mr Smith Jones, then by extension his wife, who also worked in the shop, became Mrs Smith Jones

Then everyone began to call them Mr & Mrs Smith Jones, socially

The children were also given Smith as a forename .............. but were known as Smith Jones within the community

Even today, we know when someone from that community is phoning because they ask for OH with the surname Smith Jones.

easy to think that that might have happened in other cases.

Maybe Henry just adopted the name Newman because he liked it, or because it distinguished him form the rest of the Fountains in the village.

One thing that had crossed my mind ............... regarding the difference in age

Has anyone looked carefully at Henry's age on the 1911 Census?

Could that have been mis-read by the transcriber, and thus the birth year wrongly calculated?
