I have a leather bound prayer book with the name Maria Blandina Helme and the date Feby. 24th 1856 inscribed inside the front cover. Could have been a christening or confirmation gift. Willing to return it to a bona fide descendant. |

Her husband and son were clergy men so maybe that is how the bible came about. |

Thank you all for your replies, and thanks to Cynthia for her reminder to check back here. I don't quite know what to do with all this information since Maria does not appear in any Genes Reuinted tree. I will look at Rootsweb as suggested by Ginny, but I'm afraid I didn't know what Barry was talking about. We are almost certainly looking at the right Maria because the date in the Prayer Book reveals it was a 21st birthday gift. To me that's a perfect match. I've no idea how it came into my mother's possession as we have no connection to the Helme or Sharpe families that I know of. It's a nice heavy book, its dark maroon cover having gold patterning, and the gold page edging still shines a bit. The large black and red type is as crisp as the day it was printed by the Oxford University Press in 1852. I'll never use it for its intended purpose so if Maria does have any living descendant who would like it, I'm happy to pass it on. |
